This “subliminal definition” article will finally give an official definition for the term subliminal, and indeed all the terms associated with it. We have tried to include all the main terms and related vocabulary, but if there is something missing please let us know.

Subliminal = Comes from the two Latin words; Sub and Limen. Sub means under, and limen means threshold. Literally translated word for word it translates as “below the threshold”. It has more recently started to be known as basically any message designed to pass below the limits of the human perception i.e. below our levels of our conscious awareness.

Subliminal Messages = To elaborate on the definition above subliminal messages can either be be text or images flashed so fast that we can’t see them, or they can also come as embedded sounds in audio format – and again most popularly either simply above the limits of human hearing, or through subliminal backmasking…

Subliminal Backmasking = Is when played an audio track is played backwards and a message is revealed i.e. the message was behind the music – recorded backwards. These backwards messages will still be understood by your unconscious mind and stored just like any other subliminal.

Subliminal Suggestion = Is used to describe a suggestion that a hypnotherapist may make while you are in a trance, but it generally describes the transmission of any kind of information which subliminally tries to provoke a particular response or type of behavior in you. This can be through regular conversations with friends or through specific leading questions.

Subliminal Persuasion = Similar to the above, but generally refers to a more manipulative intention with the message – for example where subliminal suggestions are used by sales people to try and persuade you to buy, or when such suggestions are used in advertising – both TV commercials or magazines / billboards – commonly the suggestions hint towards Sex – to try and stimulate your mind and make the advert more memorable.

Subliminal Hynposis = Describes the situation where you enter a trance like state without being aware of it. We all enter and leave these trances all the time; for example when writing, daydreaming, riding a bike, watching tv, etc all put us into different states of awareness. It can be intentional, or simply by doing a certain activity.

Subliminal Learning = This is when actual physical learning occurs from using subliminal technology. Eventually these messages spill into our conscious reality and physical and learning or development – this can be anything from improved memory, the ability to learn a foreign language, even personal development such as enhanced confidence.
