The patient needs to start by relaxing thoroughly. This can take some getting used to, but there are some things that will help. Firstly, you should be in a very comfortable position, preferably lying down and what you are wearing should be loose fitting and easy to rest in. Appropriate lighting is also important and it is a good idea to avoid any bright lights as they may cause distractions. The patient should also not be too tired, as they may fall asleep rather than into a trance.

The reasons for being hypnotized should thoroughly discussed beforehand. With regards to this, the appropriate questions will then be asked when the subject has reached a subconscious state. Using a variety of relaxation exercises, and speaking softly to the subject are the first steps in getting them to reach a state of perfect relaxation. Slow, steady breathing is also important to maintain relaxation.

Hypnotisation is not so difficult for the hypnotist, but can be very difficult for the subject. These difficulties are normally brought about by a lack of faith or willpower.

When coming back to a level of normal consciousness, it is important that this process be done smoothly so to avoid any unpleasant surprises or any undue confusion. Patience is very important at all times on the part of the hypnotist.
